A collective of bibliophiles talking about books. Book Fox (vulpes libris): small bibliovorous mammal of overactive imagination and uncommonly large bookshop expenses. Habitat: anywhere the rustle of pages can be heard.
I recently released the final book in my beach trilogy (Blue – Air – Ride) and while much of the writing was done at home (usually late at night when my children were asleep) I also wrote some of the big scenes in cafes around Newquay, Cornwall. I discovered that being out of the house was good for my productivity, as it made me less likely to procrastinate, and more likely to receive a fortifying dose of sugar and caffeine.
For those who are interested, here are some of my favourite writing haunts.
The Little Cake Shop, Newquay – Blue
Blue – I wrote some of the pivotal scenes in Blue at The Little Cake Shop at Chester Court. My eldest daughter had just started nursery and I didn’t want to go home and spend three hours watching TV or cleaning, so I took my iPad and wrote in a place that smelt absolutely heavenly, rather than at my home, which smelt of damp. The owners of the cake shop always made me feel very welcome and I gave them a thank you in the acknowledgements section of Blue.
Usual refreshments: Latte and the best Bakewell in Newquay.
Whiskers, Newquay – Air
I had a new baby when I was writing Air and I didn’t get out of the house much, except for a weekly meeting with members of the film team at Whiskers in the town centre. I tended to arrive an hour early and use the time to edit the writing I’d done the night before. The clientele usually included surfers, artists and musicians and I did some excellent eavesdropping here.
Usual refreshments: Mint tea and vegan cupcake.
The Lakeside, Newquay – Ride
I wrote Ride, the final book of the trilogy, at several locations in Newquay, including Fistral Beach Bar and Trenance Tea Rooms, but my usual writing retreat was the Lakeside, down at Trenance boating lake. This is also where I usually meet readers who are visiting Newquay and want me to sign their books.
Usual refreshment: Pot of Earl Grey and a toasted teacake.
Blue, Air & Ride are published by Quercus Children’s Books.
