Vulpes Libris

A collective of bibliophiles talking about books. Book Fox (vulpes libris): small bibliovorous mammal of overactive imagination and uncommonly large bookshop expenses. Habitat: anywhere the rustle of pages can be heard.

Postponement Announcement

As you may have noticed from our schedule on the side bar, Leena intended to write about some plays of Thomas Middleton today. However, the dastardly Jacobeans have thwarted her attempts to write about them this week and as soon as she can escape their clutches, she will put up her post. We can’t give a definite date, because of course, it all depends upon her fencing skills and what route her carriage may have to take to elude the Jacobean pursuers, but we promise that at a near future date, after some refreshments and pastry, Leena will unveil the long promised essay.

Never trust a Jacobean, that’s what my mother always telled me, and by golly, she was right …

Yes, far too much thigh-slapping and doublet-divesting…….
Never heard of a Carolean dramatist named Ford, until I came across this obscure and old portion of Norman Nicholson’s prose, which could only ever have been created by an accomplished poet, methinks:-

‘…..And Ford could take simple words and lay them side by side like pieces
of coloured glass for the light to shine through them:-

‘. Fernando, in short words, howe’er my tongue
Did often chide thy love, each word thou spak’st
Was music to my ear; was never poor,
Poor wretched woman lived that loved like me,
    So truly, so unfeignedly.’
