Vulpes Libris

A collective of bibliophiles talking about books. Book Fox (vulpes libris): small bibliovorous mammal of overactive imagination and uncommonly large bookshop expenses. Habitat: anywhere the rustle of pages can be heard.

Happy Birthday to Us!

Five no Jive

This Thursday, against all the odds and to our considerable surprise, we celebrate our 5th birthday.

Much agonizing has been going on in the Den over how – or indeed IF – we should celebrate the occasion.  Should we break out the cupcakes and go berserk with the bunting, or carry on as normal, like the sophisticated grown-ups we pretend to be?

In the end, of course, the cupcakes won and we decided on a mega nostalgia-fest.

We open proceedings on Monday by reprinting our first ever review, originally published on the 18th of October 2007.

On Tuesday, we are joined by Catherine Jones of the Romantic Novelists’ Association and Kirsty Doole (currently on maternity leave – but not for much longer – and usually to be found lurking in the Press Office at an academic publishers) sharing their memories of and thoughts on the first five years of Vulpes Libris.

Wednesday sees the much anticipated unveiling of our most popular EVER review – so popular, in fact, that, incredibly, it’s attracted almost twice as many hits as the review in second place.

Thursday is the Big Day – the 18th of October – exactly five years since we first opened our doors as a collective book blog. To celebrate we went for a record: the most Book Foxes in one place at any one time.   There will be NINE of us, each nominating our favourite review by a fellow Book Fox, who was selected at random by means of little pieces of screwed up yellow paper …

On Friday, Brother Guy Consolmagno, Edward Petherbridge and Jay Benedict will take centre stage (my analogy comes from the theatre, you know …) with their special memories of the Book Foxes and our place in their lives.

And finally, on Saturday the one, the only, the Founder Fox Leena will be tracking down former Book Foxes to answer the question “Where are they now?”.

While someone rushes off to unearth our first ever review from the bowels of the system, we leave you with Leena’s original greeting to a unsuspecting world:

Welcome to our new collective blog! We are a bunch of people from different countries and backgrounds, with one thing in common: we all love books and we love to talk about them – and talking about books is so much more fun when you don’t have to talk to yourself. You can read more about us at the links on the sidebar; between us we have just about every genre covered.

We hope you’ll stop by again for reviews, author interviews, and other book-related talk!

(P.S. A welcome post of this kind has got to be the blogging equivalent of an answering machine message. I can practically feel the strained joviality in my fingers.)

And these cupcakes look really scrumptious, all soft and yummy… mmmmm. I think I am really hungry!

Many Happy Returns Vulpes Libris, and huge congratulations to the entirely wonderful Book Foxes who keep it going. Can it really be five years?… I suppose it is. Long may it continue!

I’m not surprised by this event. You have turned me onto so many good books over the last several years. Thanks for all that you do!
