I was so enthusiastic after my review below that I emailed Faber & Faber and they kindly gave us three copies of Ben Wilson’s Decency and Disorder: The Age of Cant 1789-1837 for a giveaway. Leave a comment in this thread – just say hullo or pip-pip – to enter your name in the magical salad bowl, from which the three winners will be drawn by a Man of Unimpeachable Rectitude, a.k.a. my father.
Winners to be drawn on Sunday. Do pipe up before then – it’s an excellent book for anyone with even a passing interest in history!
(My fellow Bookfoxes aren’t eligible for this draw, but they are welcome to say ‘pip-pip’ anyway, if it should please them
)

Hullo or pip-pip
Hi there! Sounds interesting. Please enter me!
Hello! I’d love to win, the book sounds very interesting!
Pip-pip!
Can dad compensate me because of the second-class delivery mess up?
I’d love to pip-pip here myself but Leena would probably recognise my address
Good luck to you all and it would be interesting to hear if the winners think as highly of the book as Leena.
Eva, I’m afraid my father is too much of a Man of Integrity for that. But you’re otherwise eligible
Good luck, everyone, and keep on pip-pipping till Sunday…
Oh, add me in, definitely! Thanks!
Yo yo yo
pip-pip!
your review made me want to run out and read this right away!
I’ve always been interested in this time period because of my interest in the rise and fall of Art Nouveau (approx 1880-1910) and the social, philosophical and economic effect of the industrial revolution.
Hullo! I do love a contest – please enter me:)
Ooh, pip-pip – me please. Though if I don’t win I’ll probably buy it anyway…
pip-pip/hullo…..sounds quite interesting and I would love to be entered!
The book sounds very interesting to this Janite. So pip-pip! Hooray!
pip-pip, thanks for the giveaway! Sounds interesting!
Does anyone know where the term “pip pip” originates?
Aren’t orange seeds called pips? Would it be related to that? Or “pipped at the post”? Isn’t it also a name, at least in Dickensian England?
Wee~ HISTORY! Sign me up? XD
Sounds fascinating. Please count me in. Pip-pip!
Hi there! Fascinating title! I would love to read it, so please enter me!

Ooh. Can I have a pip-pip, too? It’s just so terribly, terribly jolly hockey sticks …!
This is, of course, not me. This is my identical twin.

I’m an avid history learner and this book sounds interesting, for sure!

I found you through Pemberley. How nice of you to offer this wonderful book!
Count me in, please.
Pip-pip! Thank you for the giveaway!
Your good twin, Moira or your evil one?
I’d love a copy too so please enter me. And thanks for a great site.
This is my first post here and I’m ashame to say that it is to get a free book. But I assure you that I do come here from time to time to be enlightened.
pip-pip!!
Oh please, please, please, let the gods decide that your father picks me. When I read your review, I added the book to a list I keep in the front of my diary to buy when I am next in an English language bookshop. Obviously, I could afford to buy it myself but it would be so much more exciting, if I got it free. I am reading “The Lady and the Unicorn” by Tracy Chevalier for my book club and, tiens (as one of her hopeless characters would say), I am losing the will to live. If I win, I will push for my bookclub to read this next. Does it strike you that I am trying to bribe the man of unimpeachable reputation? Will canvassing disqualify candidates? Would you like to hear a little more about my interest in the Regency? Should I stop while I still can?
Yours in hope,
Anne
Please put me in your hat. Love your site and all the foxy pics
Hello, sounds like an interesting book. Please enter me in the competition.
