hi, what a great interview and what a great blog this is! for anyone interested i wrote an article about harry enfield's yorkshireman sketch on my art and music blog; here's the direct link to the article. i still get loads of people googling harry enfield's yorkshireman sketch which is really heartwarming as it was a stroke of genius (and also where egg bank got the idea for egg bank i may add.)

i've got some shots of charlie higson when he was performing with the higsons at the turn of the 80s which i'll be blogging about soon as well.

it's through harry enfield that i've stumbled across this blog but coincidentally i'm an author of literary fiction with two books due for publication in 2009 so i will have a good look round here when i've finished writing today's chapter! :)

great blog! :)

What an entertaining and interesting interview - many thanks to you both. And such a wide variety of books discussed! I ended up longing to read The Secret Purposes and Molly Moon... and made me think I should perhaps give Money a second chance.

Brilliant interview! And Harry expressed it better than I ever could - Stephen Fry's sonorous voice does not transfer well into print...

Amusing interview. I found it intriguing that Mr. Enfield, a comedian, has read 'everything' on WW1, a tragedy. That hints at untold depths.
It's also curious that he thinks "The Simpsons" are more intellectual than say, "Monty Python" or Eddie Izzard, who use literary and historical references liberally. And all Larry David does is whine, so I don't find him funny at all. Mr. Enfield was much funnier in this interview than Larry David has ever been, so I think he underestimates British comedy. And I commend him on his Five Favorites, excellent choices.

"A lovely guy in the seat behind me went “Raaaaaar” and shook my shoulders at the bit where the monster thing bursts out of John Hurt."

LOLOL!!

That IS a particularly gruesome moment though, isn't it?

What a great interview. Well done and thankyou :)

I had a similar incident with a film when I was 12 and a friends mother took us to see The Omen II and Alien in a double bill (!). A lovely guy in the seat behind me went "Raaaaaar" and shook my shoulders at the bit where the monster thing bursts out of John Hurt. Still can't get stomach ache without thinking about it!

Agree about Talking Heads Rosy, it's a very enlightening read.
